Front cover of Runner's World magazine - Weight Loss Special Lookie, lookie - what came in the mail the other day... OOOOOOOOOOH! New Runner's World! The WEIGHT-LOSS SPECIAL (insert roll of eyes here). According to the headlines, you too can lose FIVE pounds in a month. My coworker actually scoffed at that headline saying she wanted to lose five pounds TODAY. Don't we all, sister. Don't we all! So I threw the magazine in my bag and didn't pay much attention to it as I tend to occupy myself with podcasts or games on my TTC ride to work. But then the magazine slipped out of my bag yesterday afternoon and I saw the glossy ad gracing the back of the mag... back of runner's world magazine featuring Honda CR-V ad with cupcakesUm...What's wrong with this picture? Cupcakes...on a runner's magazine...that's touting weight-loss tips and tricks...with the word crave so subtly underneath the images of the evil treats...SELLING A CAR. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?? I don't know whether to pat the ad company on the back for smart placement and timing or be totally annoyed for exploiting people's emotions and feelings in an issue that is focused on improving health. Thoughts?

Hi Mouse, I lurk but never comment. I read that magazine today and thought the same thing. I think that the relationship with food, body image and feelings about own self make this photo mean less to me than it did 85 lbs ago. I know that eating that stuff makes me have a bigger ass and that by choosing myself over any craving, I am winning the war against myself. You show courage by being so honest that I want to tell you how much your blog means to me. Mousearoo, you are my hero!

It pisses me off. I'm just sick and tired of it. We try SOOOO hard, not even "just" to lose weight, but to educate ourselves by reading, reading, and more reading of articles, latest studies etc. I mean that IS what the responsible and educated person does right? And in the process "they" make sure to keep us all still "unsure" or conflicted of what to do in some form and we keep buying into it. It's a freaking gong show. I'm so sick of it! I suppose if we weren't conflicted, we'd have it all figured out, be "there" at that place we are all striving to "be" and wouldn't feel the need to buy into this stuff anymore. So yay to them for being money makers, but it's to the point where it's not just at the expense of our wallets.

Sorry for the rant, but I know you know what I mean.

i roll my eyes everytime i see a diet-aid advertisement in my 'health' or 'fitness' magazine... it's like, "what are you doing?" but know it just comes down to money in the end...

i have to be honest - those cupcakes look very tasty... ;)

One of the many, many reasons that I hate having to learn Marketing as part of my program. I walk out of each class feeling dirty about learning how to "target" people and "make them feel" a certain way.

Ugh.

@Vanessa - I have the opposite reaction when I took a marketing class. It actually made me more aware of how the ad is trying to manipulate me into parting with my money.

But in general, once I stop reading certain magazines and watching commercials, I find that I am much happier with myself. The more they make us unhappy with ourselves, the more likely they are to "sell us a solution."
