So we lapsed catholics are marking the beginning of Lent today. 40 days where we reflect, fast and pray in advance of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Traditionally, we give up something for the season to remind us of the sacrifices He made... Look at me being all theological and stuff. *preens* So, last year I gave up excuses. I did pretty well with it too. This year I'm giving up a temptation that is REALLY to blame for my weight gain (besides sheer laziness and my lost love of running). I'm giving up boredom baking. Yup. I said it! ...er, typed it. For weeks now I've been peeking in my cupboards and then googling recipes with combination of ingredients found. I will then bake cookies, brownies, or muffins and gobble most of them down before throwing out the rest in disgust of my gluttony. But no more. I will not buy vanilla. I will not buy sugar. I will not buy flour. I will DEFINITELY not buy cornmeal. I will not buy chocolate chips. I will not capitulate (sorry. I LURVE that word and needed an excuse to use it on this blog at some point in my life). Let's see how long this one lasts, eh? So my guilt-ridden, church avoiding catholic friends, what will you be giving up this season? Not religious? Giving up anything for the season anyway? Have at 'er in the comments.

That is a great idea! I'm not giving up anything I'm just challenging myself to 30 min exercise and tracking everyday for the 40 days!

I am lapsed Catholic too...

I like what you are giving up!

I might have to put broccoli on my shopping list for next week ;)

so when you give up baking - does cooking (veggies, dinner, etc) appeal? - take the place of the baking?

That's a good one. Good luck!

@vickie My problem is the boredom baking usually takes place in addition to the cooking healthy meals.

I still do all of that, especially given the fact that I have no microwave :P

The problem is I can't cook that much because most of it will spoil by the time I get around to it!

I'm too weak to ever bake or else I'll eat most of it, and feel guilty about throwing it out, so eat the rest too.

I'm giving up chocolate bars and chips, two things I've been indulging in way too often lately.

I have a HUGE list of things I am giving up/improving on & taking up.

Giving up:
I'm giving up peanut butter...this is like crack to me and a huge trigger food.

No snacking after 7:30 p.m., no BLT's, and no booze unless its a special occasion (ie. St. Paddy's Day).

Improving on:
Accountability...If I bite it I write it...simple.

Keeping in touch with my family..we are quite spread out amongst 4 different provinces and there's just no excuse not to call home!

Taking up:
Scrap booking. I have about a half dozen scrap books bought but not one single one started.

I'm sure I actually have more but just can't remember!

Good luck!!!

I'm not going to give anything up, I'm going to practice yoga daily. I was doing really great until I moved and then it all went out the window. No more excuses!

Good luck with the no baking!

candy and soda (I usually have a diet coke in the afternoon and that has stretched into two or three). 39 more days...

Good luck with the no baking of treats--that's a great idea!

Sounds like a great plan.

I'm not giving up anything for lent (not even a "lapsed Catholic" here - just a very unreligious person) but about 6 or 7 weeks ago I started to give up refined sugar. It has been a challenge, but it's been a great decision and I feel great! Sugar is everywhere, but I'm finding ways to avoid it and new things to enjoy in it's place.

Good luck!!

Wll I am finally delurking. I had to for this post.

This is a great idea. Something that I need to do. I am the queen of boredom baking. In fact I was just about to make some chocolate PB cookies for my little girl (yeah right!). Should probably reconsider that.
