The simple life

So almost three weeks ago, I embarked on my solo journey in life. It's been weird adjusting to my own place, finding new routines, etc. but also exciting. I thought I was pretty set in terms of the necessities for living but keep finding things that I do not have yet but there are minor things here and there that I still have to get. One of them is NOT a microwave. I'm making a conscious choice not to buy or use one, with the exception of work. I remember that Sara had done the same thing recently and it really inspired me (mostly because she's wicked cool). So far I haven't really missed it. I'm still making a few portions of pasta and rice at a time and putting them away in the fridge. I've been successful in just using my pots and pans to reheat everything at once and make the same fabulous meals I always do (which was a pork chop, whole wheat penne, broccoli and spinach in PC Memories of Dad's Grill, Maple, Apple & Beer Sauce last night). If I was the type of girl who hated her food all mixed together, I'm not sure how successful I'd be :P Although it takes me few extra minutes to make my meals each night, I don't really miss it. Is there something you use every day out of convenience that you could never part with?

My cell phone, without a doubt!!! Held out for a long time before getting one but once I did, I was hooked!

Glad you have opted found a new way to approach an everyday task. That's gotta make you feel good!

I think that is great that you gave up your microwave!!! I admire Sara (and now you) for giving up something convenient for the sake of your health (or potential health problems)...I stopped using mine so much after Sara first explained it all...Danny didn't budge so much, so he is allowed to microwave his stuff if he wants, but I use the oven...I can't get rid of it though...it looks so pretty above the oven!!!

We finally got rid of cable when we moved. It turns out you really have to be creative to fill your time when you don't have tv!

I only use my microwave for emergency meat defrosting, which is a very rare occurrence because I plan ahead 99% of the time. I dislike the nuclear oven :P.

i had to admit that i would sincerely miss having a computer... though mine hasn't been working at home (cable is out), i'm lucky to have one at work as well as one to use while at my boyfriend's house... it was nice not being "connected" while camping but miss certain things like blogs... who would've thunk it? ;o)

My coffee maker on a timer... I don't think I could function without coffee waiting for me when I roll out of bed.

my hair dryer - crazy curly/wavy hair that I have to smooth out every morning:)

I remember reading Sara's microwave post, but decided not to read the article it refered to - I don't think I can part with it... if I read it I might not be able to continue using it and feel miserable... You don't mind having to clean up all your pots and pans? And the extra prep time? I think it's great though - that you successfully live sasn microwave - chapeau! I'm lazy ;)

I've been sort of pondering the microwave thing. Sara made such a convincing arguement for giving it up and she almost had me hauliong mine out to the end of the driveway for the garbage man. I have definitely cut down on usage but it's still a kitchen fixture for me.

What a good idea. I can't see my family giving up ours but then it is the only appliance I let my daughter use.

Yay!!! Well of course I'm happy to hear that you are using the microwave less and not even buying one! We use ours now for for storage (since it is also our exhaust). But really life without it isn't too difficult once you get used to it and I find food actually tastes so much better! Mmmm that sauce sounds real good!

When I had my own apartment I didn't have a microwave, it just had too small a kitchen and all I ever used it for was popcorn. I didn't miss having it at all, I still had popcorn most nights, but it was both yummyer (is that a word?) and healthier from the air popper.

What could I not live without? Hmm, probably the internet! It's how I keep connected to most people!

Couldn't go without my cell phone, IPod, or laptop...things that I went without for most of my beginning life. My Ipod broke the other day (I dropped it on my treadmill and it got trapped in the side) and I went right online to order another. I know. Sad. Now my laptop is broken and I'm pretty much lost. I'm using hubby's but his doesn't have any of my usual stuff on it which stinks!! Oh well life does go on!

Wow, life without a microwave. I can't say I'm brave enough to make that leap just yet. Enjoy your new space!
