You'd think I'd know my own skin by now...

So I went to buy a new suit today after my run tonight. My function tomorrow night is pretty formal but we're running the show, so a suit is appropriate. I haven't bought a suit since college and then they were 12s when I was at my previous low of 175ish. The sad part is I still have all of those suits in my closet and haven't packed them up and shipped them off to goodwill or anyone else. I just can't part with them. I have lots of nice dresses, dress pants, dress shirts, sweaters, and blazers, but no matching suit in my size. So off I went to the nice unnamed women's clothing store to purchase an outfit. I picked up a skirt in a 7/8 and a 5/6 because I've always been clueless about my size. Sometimes my hips fit in a 5/6 without wiggle, sometimes it won't get past my thighs AT ALL. Today, it went up no problem and I felt like a bit of an idiot for bringing in the bigger size. You'd think I'd know my body by now, having been at goal for almost two years, but nooooooooo. Then I asked the sales lady to get me a matching jacket, as I was trying on cardigans and camis before. She asked me what size and I told her probably a size up and she looked at me funny. I didn't think anything of it. I know my body well enough to KNOW that I always need a larger size up top versus down below. So again, we're working with a 7/8 and a 5/6. She goes to give me the 5/6 but I didn't want to embarrass myself and asked her to try the 7/8 first. One arm in...then the other...buttons up.... Yup - too big. WTF?! She looks over at me and rolls her eyes and huffs a little. "Do you want to try on the SMALLER one now?", she asks. Wow - apparently I've annoyed her. "Uh...yeah. Sorry," I mumble and scurry back into the dressing room. When did this happen? When did my top half become smaller? When did sales clerks become annoyed so easily? When will I figure out what size I REALLY am? *sigh* At least I'll look cute.

Wow, a 5/6! That is AWESOME! Good for you, Mouse! :) I can only dream of the day when I'll fit into a 5/6! :)

You should now by now that a Mouse is small and teeny (they are also hairy and carry diseases...but um, I don't think that holds true for you ;p)

Perhaps the girl at the store wanted to be a 5/6 and was envious???
You friggin rule, and you are going to rock that suit!!!

My thing is I don't understand why I STILL don't know my size TO THIS DAY.

You'd think I would have caught on by now...

don't feel bad, the sales lady was a dork. she doesn't get a commission or credit unless you buy something, so it is her job to cater to you. i digress ... it is awesome! that you don't know your size! it seems annoying in the dressing room when you are trying on clothes, but in reality land it is pretty d*mn cool. when i worked at a clothing store for like 2 months i was careful to ask, "what size do you feel most comfortable in?" rather than "what size do you want?" and i would go from the answer to the first question to ask if they wanted the next size up or the next size down. (i never wanted to offend them. that was my biggest priority, above getting credit for the amount i was supposed to sell per hour. maybe that's why i was not destined to a career in sales.) seriously though, good for you for braving the big bag retail world. if you still have 12s in your closet, that is a sign this was a big step for you.

p.s. email me when you are going to be in nyc again!

it can take AGES for the brain to wrap itself around the new size huh?

sadly it can take moments (ok it feels like moments) for a pint of icecream eaten on the couch to wrap itself around my arse.

Wouldn't it be great if everyw omen's clothing sotre got together and came up with universal sizing...sigh...what a dream.

I still look at size 13 clothes and briefly think...oh I should try that on, it's my size!

I say don't feel dumb! All those manufacturers make their close all different sizes. Sadly, there's no such thing as standard sizing in North America. I always bring at least 2 sizes into the change room!

Ok, it's early. Apparently I don't know how to spell CLOTHES in the morning..

first, you always look cute, so deal with it. And second I always take 2 sizes with me into the change room sometimes I take the bigger sometimes the smaller everything just fits different since there is no set universal sizing..

Yay for the small sizes!

I swear, with our changing bodies, vanity sizing, and different sizes w/ the same number from different designers (or sometimes different sizes w/in the same number for the same designer), it's amazing we can find anything to cover our bods.

I actually found this website that fits you ... dunno yet if it works ... I talk about it on my post. I should get my clothes today so we'll see.

I think it is hard to know your exact size since every store sizes differently - so I totally understand it!

Congrats on the 5/6 - at least you didn't know you were smaller not bigger!! Hope to see pics!

I agree with the others. It sure would be a lot easier if there really were a true universal size system. Until then, I'll just enjoy squeezing into a 4 at banana republic...that really fit more like an 8...

ha! that reminds me of when i bought those dresses a while back - i never thought i would fit into the smaller size but low and behold, i did... personally, it's taken me a long time to adjust how i see myself in the mirror... i still feel 'big' so that's how i see myself when it comes to looking at clothes... and go you for getting a 5/6... :o)

I was wondering if this whole size confusion/amnesia would go away, but seeing that you've been really successful for such a long time, I guess I'm going to have be confused for quite some time. :)
