Screw you, hostess!

I am not ashamed to admit that I LOVE those little 100 calorie pack carrot cake muffins with their creamy filling and cream cheese frosting. Let us not discuss the fact that they have streusel muffins now in banana flavour (I only got blueberry ones). But their teeny stature leaves much to be desired...literally. They don't fill you up at all and just leave you wanting more. So when I was in the grocery store the other day (giving in to the tostitos ads - yes, it's true), I noticed that cake mixes and frosting were on for $.99 and a light bulb went on in my head. I could produce a more filling version of these bad boys but also more of them for about the same price by making diet pop cupcakes. I picked up carrot cake mix, cream cheese frosting and some diet gingerale and off I went. What you get is a 2 point muffin which a HELL OF A LOT bigger than the other and then I splurged a little bit and added an extra point for a bit of cream cheese frosting. AND I don't have to travel to the freakin' states to get these things which is much better!! But how sad is it we get so wrapped up in 100 calorie pack junk when we can make this kind of stuff on our own....
Especially when you see how they stack up :P

that side by side picture sure tells it all.. frankly I'm still pissed about the WW board ads, seriously can't believe the lack of judgement on that one..

I completely agree with the "making it ourselves" comment. I admit I used to buy everything pre-made and processed. Now I've cut most of it out and I'm constantly amazed by how easy it is to make so many things. AND bonus - they taste better too!

Good post!

Good job Mouse!

I personally think that the carrot cakes are the best diet pop cupcakes. Something about the ginger ale not tasting as diety I think. :)

WOw, I didn't realize just how teeny those little hostess cakes are!!!

And you made me want to make diet pop cupcakes this weekend (it has been a LONG time...Danny will thank you)...

and for the record...I ate the cakesters :( to prove that I didn't like them and that I am sure they are all disgusting and chemically...I am now hooked... double :(

You've just given me a project for the weekend. My plan freeze them and take them out one at a time.

I keep them in the fridge so they last longer :)

I enjoy the cherry chip with cream soda or dr pepper berries and cream too.

But this was just too perfect in terms of recreating the hostess ones.

i don't think my cupcakes EVER look as good as yours looks to me right now! those scrawny little 100 calorie cakes look very unappealing all unwrapped and sitting there helpless without the wrapper, no?

the side by side picture really speaks for itself... yum!

sorry for being so blonde, but you are replacing the oil/eggs/water with the ginger ale, correct? they look so darn tasty! :o)

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :)

No fear, my pretty blonde friend!

It's EXACTLY what you think.

Replace eggs, oil, blah blah with one can of your fave diet pop and bake 24 cuppycakes.

2 points a piece.

Check out some frosting or some coolwhip for frosting (but adds points).

YUMMO

I want yours! It looks so much bigger and yummier. There is nothing better than homemade cupcakes! Did you just add the gingerale and nothing else?

OMG look at that comparison!!! I actually laughed out loud at how HUGE yours looked next to them! I had no idea they were that small!!!! You go girl! And Hostess should be ashamed of themselves (they're made by hostess, right?).

tsk, tsk. We know better. Cuz we're smart weight watchers.
