You know you've lived in a big city for too long when...

  • you don't notice the "well-adjusted" man screaming his head off on queen west that everyone else is trying to avoid until he's literally in your face
  • the guy on the unicycle on yonge street isn't as impressive as that 70 year-old guy with the ginormous chess board in yonge/dundas square (who you've also seen macking ladies at an irish pub on saturday nights)
  • you get a few kilometres away from the core and you start wondering if you're already in the burbs
  • travelling time on transit is a golden nap time opportunity ...but why some people think it's also their kitchen table is beyond you ...and also icky
  • the regular panhandler outside the eaton centre waves at you on a daily basis
  • the hookers on the corner hiss at you
  • you can tell the city dwellers from the tourists by their walking speed (plus the tourist types are busy looking up and will crash right into you)
ok...I just realized i'm giving a really bad impression about the area I live in...but it's actually quite nice :) I just realized some of these things as I was walking to dinner with Li last night. We went to the Pickle Barrel and I had these amazing make your own Thai Lettuce Wraps - you totally trick yourself into have salad and don't have to use the dressing. so yummers. But then tonight I'm going to Il Fornello and i'm scurred. Everything there is going to kill me point wise and I was a lazy arse this morning and didn't run so no extra APs pour moi. So if you were me, what YOU get?

WOW, I know I am from a small town when I read that and go WOW people are really like that???

Oh, and I would most likely be the tourist you would bump into while I am looking at all the crazy shit going on around me!!! *laughs*

At least they have an alternative section to the menu, that's a plus right? Good luck!

Il Fornello! Yum! I miss Il Fornello. There are none in Montreal.

I'd go for the Grilled Atlantic Salmon Caesar salad with the dressing on the side, or the Grilled Chicken and Feta (again, with dressing on the side). Even though they're salads, they're probably big enough for a meal and would be low in points. Also, I'm a sucker for feta and salmon.

If you didn't want a salad for supper, then I'd skip the pasta part of the menu (why pay for pasta when you can make it at home?) and go for the Atlantic Salmon entree. Are you going to the Church location? If so, I'd consider the beef tenderloin (without the mashed potatoes) or the roast veal striploin as well.

You make me miss Toronto so much sometimes!

hahahah- come back, laura! come back! we'll do il fornello on church! it's up the street from me :)

but i'm going to the beach one today. boo :(

I wish I lived in a big city. I miss the hooker hisses...

Glad to see things are going well in the t-dot!

Do the mussels as an appy, then either the Chicken & Feta salad or one of the healthier pizzas. Just eat a couple pieces and you'll have dinner for tomorrow too!!!

salad and some entree with chicken or seafood - and stay away from anything cream-based... then again, if you see something that you MUST have - just eat half and put the rest in a doggy-bag... :o)

Wow, what a menu! I wanna go there! Even their pasta dishes seem pretty healthy and I'm sure if you only had half of an order of any of them with a salad, any choice of those would be fine. My pasta choices are:

Linguini di Mare
Tiger shrimp, scallops, mussels + calamari, light olive oil, fresh tomato sauce

Spaghettini Primavera
Broccoli, spinach, peppers, caramelized onions, fresh tomato sauce, parmesan

Spaghettini Misto
Grilled chicken, tiger shrimp sautéed with caramelized onions, broccoli, cherry tomatoes in lemon garlic olive oil

These would be a great choice too:

Atlantic Salmon
Crispy skin Atlantic salmon on assorted green vegetables, with roasted red potatoes, lemon thyme vinaigrette

Chicken with Chevre
(Church location only)
Chevre + red pepper stuffed chicken breast, natural jus, bouquet of greens + yukon gold, sweet potato strudel

Grilled Chicken + Feta
Grilled chicken on baby spinach with goat feta + slivered almonds in a light honey mustard dressing

Plus you can build your own wacky pizza with all kinds of crazy crusts!

I usually get whole wheat pizza crust, no meat toppings (well sometimes chicken) and only eat half. Say "no" to bread on the table though!

The guy on Queen West...does he ride a bike up and down the street screaming? If you live and work in TO, I'm sure you're aware of Zanta. Name not familiar? Check him out on Wikipedia.

marie said...

nope - not Zanta, PP. I wouldn't call him "well-adjusted" though, he's freakin hilarious!

but i haven't seen him around in months. i thought he was pretty much banned from everywhere now and was sent packing to the burbs.

marie, thanks for your comment on my blog. For some bizarre reason it has me free associating about a certain chocolate eclair available only in Montreal. (Wonder if they deliver....)

marie said...

because i wasn't hungry already...you're evil. pure evil.

Marky Mark said...

ya but it's too far away to really tempt you, and in comparison something at say, Tim's, isn't really worth it. (Or so I tell myself.)

marie said...

there's still a month until scotia then another two weeks until toronto - you should make a TO eclair your next running/eating quest :)

Marky Mark said...

Good idea! I'm doing the Scotia waterfront half on Septmeber 30th but then the Zoo 10K on the weekend of the TO marathon. Are you doing both Scotia and Toronto?

marie said...

yuppers - BOTH :)
