my bikini beef

Shape Magazine is great and all... LOVE that they give some good tips and moves in every issue. I've used their site for exercises for my stability ball but I find a lot of their suggestions for lifting, um...too cutesy for me. For instance, their current series.... the Bikini Body Countdown. They're running articles in four issues and saying that in four weeks you can have a bikini body....uh, RRRRRRIGHT. I looked over the current issue that someone had at the gym yesterday as we were trying to decipher one of the movements (that was NOT explained properly and was written BACKWARDS to the picture [left to right where the girl was showing right to left]). I felt like I needed an engineering or a physics degree to figure these things out. Plus, every exercise you are to use either 5 or 8lbs weights or a Dynaband. ...do people still have Dynabands? I had one for a pilates dvd I use but it disintegrated this fall when I left it on the window sill all summer (not smart). So if you don't have one of those, you are SOL for about half of the exercises in each "week". We couldn't even find one at the gym. Just looking at these things, I don't see it as realistic. Unless a women is already at a low percentage of body fat and incorporating high fat burning cardio in her workout routine, she's not getting a bikini body in four weeks. Why tell her she's going to get one by doing this Minnie Mouse routines with 5lb weights with 8 reps and 7 sets (wtf is up with that, by the way?!)?? you're just going to have a lot of bored and discouraged ladies who were lured in by vanity and the pretty pictures of the svelte chick in the pretty pink bikini who hoped to get the perfect bod by playing around with teeny free weights. Sorry ladies, not going to happen. If you coupled it with the high intensity interval training they list underneath the article on the website, NOW WE'RE TALKING! Still, I don't think if I followed that for 4 weeks I'd be bikini ready...I still think it's a load of crap :)

You mean in 4 weeks I can get my 238lb butt in a bikini? I'm with you - that's a big load of crap. I'm sure it may help you tone but what good is that if your muscles are hidden under layers of fat?

You look great - keep up what you're doing!

I love Shape magazine, not that I believe everything in it by any means, and the pics and explainations often don't go together. What I do like it is makes me try different machines at the gym, I haven't thought about before and I don't find the pictures as absolutely scary as Oxygen magazine, those girls are down right terrifying! LOL

i just love all those headlines on magazines at the check outs saying that in x amount of time you'll have the perfect body! i agree with you that those things are for the itty bitty girls that have like 1% body fat! give me like 4 years then maybe i'd be closer to that, no where near the girl in the picture though!!! LOL!!!

So true, the magazines always claim "Fab Body in 4 Weeks" that is IF you are already in TERRIFIC shape.
